During his New Year's Eve concert at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, Billy Joel delighted fans by performing Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," featuring drummer Jason Bonham, son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. (Watch the original version below.)

The surprise collaboration occurred ten songs into the December 31st show. Joel introduced Jason Bonham, who took his place behind the drum kit. Rhythm guitarist Mike DelGuidice provided lead vocals for the rendition, while Joel played piano and contributed backing vocals during the chorus.

Midway through the performance, Bonham showcased his skills with an impressive drum solo. Following the song, he embraced Joel, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience. Continuing the vibe of a really big show, the setlist for the evening included covers such as The Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" and Derek and the Dominos' "Layla," along with a rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight.

Joel also performed many of his classics, including "Movin' Out," "New York State of Mind," "Piano Man," and "You May Be Right."

What's ahead for Billy Joel

Looking ahead, Billy Joel has announced a series of U.S. stadium shows for the first half of 2025, featuring co-headlining performances with Sting and Stevie Nicks. Notably, Joel and Nicks are scheduled to perform at MetLife Stadium on August 8, 2025, as part of their "Two Icons, One Night" tour.

More about Jason Bonham

Jason Bonham, born on July 15, 1966, in Dudley, Worcestershire, England, is renowned for carrying forward his father's legacy. A talented drummer from a young age, he joined the band Air Race at 17, securing a record deal with Atlantic Records and touring with prominent acts like Queen and AC/DC. Throughout his career, Bonham has performed with bands such as Foreigner and UFO, and has participated in several Led Zeppelin reunions, including the notable 2007 performance at London's O2 Arena.

In addition to his collaborations, Bonham leads "Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening," a tribute act dedicated to performing Led Zeppelin's music (though, ironically, Led Zeppelin compelled Bonham to change the band's original name)

He recently completed a series of shows, continuing to honor his father's legacy and introducing the timeless music of Led Zeppelin to new audiences. The New Year's Eve performance at UBS Arena was a memorable event for fans, blending Billy Joel's timeless hits with classic rock covers and special guest appearances, setting a high note to usher in the new year.
