This will make me sound old, but here goes: "Back in my day," TV watching was much different. Way before VHS, DVD, or streaming, we had to sit in front of the television and watch commercials between regularly scheduled programming. Yes, you read that correctly; we didn't have the option to select what we viewed. We had to check the TV Guide to find out what time our favorite shows would air and on what network.
Don't feel sorry for us because despite how horrible that may sound to new generations, it wasn't a negative thing because we didn't know any different, and we got to view MTV when it began.
With our TV-watching experience came some incredibly catchy jingles, of which I still know most of the words today. Check out some of the best commercial jingles that 80s children are sure to remember.
"A Little Longer" - Big Red Gum
What 80s kid doesn't remember "So kiss a little longer. Laugh a little longer. Stay close a little longer...Give your breath long-lasting freshness with Big Red?" The song was used by William Wrigley Jr. Company from 1977 until 1909. The jingle was composed by Peter Cofield and sung by Ryan Devereaux. In 2008, Wrigley and singer/songwriter Ne-Yo updated the jingle, which is not bad at all.
"We Wear Short Shorts" - Nair
The Church & Dwight brand of hair removal, Nair, a portmanteau of "No hair," had several slogans, but the "Short Shorts" is probably best known. The jingle is based on the 1958 song "Short Shorts" by The Royal Teens. The jingle's commercial debut occurred in 1975, and this version of the commercial won a CLIO, an annual award for innovative excellence in advertising, design, and communication. By 1983, Nair became the No. 1 Hair Removal Brand and, in 2015, celebrated its 75th anniversary.
"Give Me A Break" - Kit Kat
In 1986, Nestlé introduced an American marketing jingle for its chocolate-covered wafer treat, Kit Kat. The jingle, written by Ken Shuldman and Michael A. Levine, "Give Me A Break" was featured in commercials for the bar that is conveniently breakable into four "fingers." Researcher James J. Kellaris ranked the jingle as one of the top ten earworms. Over the years, the original has been covered by Shawn Colvin, Carrie Underwood, and others who have appeared in the commercials.
"I'm A Toys R Us Kid" - Toys R Us
Many may be surprised to learn that the highly acclaimed author, James Patterson, wrote some of the lyrics for the Toys R Us jingle with his friend Linda Kaplan Thaler, who wrote the jingle. No child of the 80s can forget the catchy song encouraging them to be a "Toys R Us kid."
"Two All-beef Patties - McDonald's
This jingle originated in the 70s but carried on well into the 80s. The Big Mac jingle cleverly had everyone singing the ingredients to the sandwich, "Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun," that was initially introduced in 1967.
