The upcoming Barbie movie appears to have taken over the world and has even seeped into rock n roll music. During the red carpet premiere interview, songwriter and producer Mark Ronson reveals that Guns N' Roses' guitarist Slash plays on the song "I'm Just Ken," sung by Barbie actor Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken.
From the videos below, Ronson mentions Slash's involvement casually while praising Gosling for his performance in the '80s power ballad. It turns out Slash is a hero of Ronson's, who was in the seventh grade when Appetite for Destruction was released. He sent the song to the guitarist, and he liked the song and agreed to play. Ronson said, "It never hurts to ask."
The video below features a clip from the movie where Ken sings the song about not knowing who is without Barbie. He describes what it is like being "just Ken."
Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig, known for Lady Bird and Little Women. She co-wrote the movie with Noah Baumbach, based on Mattel's Barbie fashion dolls. While there have been many computer-generated direct-to-video Barbie movies, this is the first live-action Barbie film.
Margot Robbie plays Barbie to Goslings Ken, and they are joined by an all-star cast, including America Ferrera , Kate McKinnon , Issa Rae , Rhea Perlman , Will Ferrell, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Nicola Coghlan, Helen Mirren, and Michael Cera.
Ronson produces the Barbie soundtrack which includes a wide variety of artists, including Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Haim, Ice Spice, Kaliii, Karol G, Khalid, the Kid Laroi, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress, Tame Impala, and cast members, Dua Lipa and Ryan Gosling, When the featured artists were announced it was also made known that several surprise artist would also be featured. Billie Eilish was the first surprise artist announced, with Sam Smith as the second, and now it has been casually revealed that Slash is also part of it, thanks to Ronson.
