The long overdue eighth studio album by The Psychedelic Furs was released in 2020, months later than expected due to delays created by the pandemic. Titled Made of Rain, the album received positive reviews and was the band's first new music in 30 years.

The Psychedelic Furs, who were initially categorized as new wave, were formed in 1977 by brothers Richard Butler and Tim Butler, vocalist and bassist, respectively. The original members consisted of the Butler brothers, Duncan Kilburn on sax, Paul Wilson on drums, and Roger Morris on guitars. Two years later, Vince Ely replaced Wilson with John Ashton, who was added as a second guitarist. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1980 and became a success in the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and Australia.

The band's second studio album, Talk Talk Talk, was released in 1981 and achieved the band's first real success in the United States. The album, which featured the original version of "Pretty in Pink," debuted on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2002, the album was reissued on vinyl and included bonus tracks.

By 1986, they would record the soundtrack version of the song featured in John Hughes's "Brat Pack" film Pretty in Pink. Said to have inspired the film, Butler has stated that the movie's interpretation of the single didn't mesh with the lyrical content. The film chronicles love and social cliques in an 80s American high school. This single became the band's biggest hit in the US and the UK and was featured on the platinum-selling soundtrack for the film.
