The 2019 musical rom-com Yesterday stars Himesh Patel as a struggling musician named Jack. In a freak global power outage, the world's memory of the Beatles is erased except for Jack, who begins performing their songs boosting his career in music.
The film is directed by Danny Boyle, well-known for his work on 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire, and more. Richard Curtis, one of Britain's most famous screenwriters responsible for Love, Notting Hill, and the Bridget Jones series, wrote Yesterday from a story he created with Jack Barth. The film also stars Lily James, Joel Fry, Ed Sheeran, and Kate McKinnon. James Corden and Michael Kiwanuka appear as themselves, with Robert Carlyle, in an uncredited role, as a 78-year-old John Lennon.
Yesterday saw its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 and has been praised for the premise, performances, and musical sequences. Patel sang and played the songs in the movie, but before this film had little exposure to the Beatles. For his audition, he was asked to perform a Coldplay song of his choice, and he chose the ballad "We Never Change." Patel impressed the panel who watched his audition, and Boyle later told Billboard that Patel had a way of making the songs feel new, in a familiar but strange way.
In an interview with Billboard, original Beatles member Paul McCartney stated that he and his wife loved the film. Boyle sent copies to Ringo Starr and his wife, George Harrison's widow, and John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, who all enjoyed the film.
Yesterday also features several Beatles Easter Eggs, including Jack mentioning he will need to be cared for until he's 64, referencing "When I'm 64." His dentist mentions getting a little help from his friends, from the Beatles' same-titled song, and Jack talks about a guitar sounding like it's weeping, referencing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
The movie recently released on Netflix and definately worth the watch.
