Taylor Hawkins' son Shane does his dad proud by playing two more heavy metal gigs
By StevieMac
It looks like Shane Hawkins, the 17-year-old son of the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, would have made his dad very proud again. Shane has been performing live on drums with Chevy Metal in California recently.
Hawkins formed Chevy Metal in 2013. They describe themselves on Facebook as a ‘70s dirt rock cover band playing deep cuts off albums. Like the Foo Fighters, the band has been aiming to carry on after Hawkins' sad death in 2022 while on tour with the Foo’s in Colombia. Taylor had gigged regularly with Chevy Metal between Foo Fighter recordings and tours.
Shane Hawkins has, of course, previously stepped into his late father's pedals and drum stool. Most notably at the Foo Fighters tribute concert for his father at Wembley Stadium, London, last September when he performed on “My Hero." A poignant song choice, for sure. He recently performed with them again at the more recent Boston Calling concert. The Foo’s have settled on Josh Freese as their new drummer on recent gigs.
Shane is a pretty accomplished drummer and able to hold his own on these stages. This year, he was awarded Drum Performance of the Year from the Drumeo Awards. He’s now taken up his father’s seat again at a couple of live gigs with Chevy Metal in late July at Agoura Hills, California.

Hawkins showed his skills, inherited or otherwise, on tracks from a variety of artists, including Motley Crue, The Police, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. Hawkins Junior wasn’t the only stage guest as the likes of John Mellencamp, Skid Row lead Sebastian Bach, and drummers for Poison and John Fogerty in Rikki Rockett and Kenny Aronoff also took part.
Here’s Hawkins on a Led Zeppelin song with Chevy Metal from those two night’s shows in July.
He looks pretty hot in this and other clips available from the two nights. You’d hope for more drum set appearances from him in the future.
