The Bear is an outstanding comedy-drama that airs on Hulu, created by Christopher Storer, known for his work on Bo Burnham's Eight Grade. While the storyline and actors are amazing, there is another element to this series that makes it stand out, the soundtrack.
Many of the songs are classified as "Dad Rock," but you don't need to be a dad to realize the genius of this soundtrack. The songs range from Pearl Jam To R.E.M with some Taylor Swift thrown in and Wilco, a Chicago-based band lending to the amazing backdrop of this series.
The Bear follows Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a guy who returns to his hometown of Chicago to run the family sandwich shop, The Original Beef, after the suicide of his brother Mickey (Jon Bernthal). Mickey left behind a long line of debt for the business, a building in disrepair, and a disgruntled staff. All that occurs in season 1, which also has a kickass soundtrack.
Things are much different in season 2 as Carmy closes the shop to rebrand and build his dream restaurant, The Bear. The second season is better than the first, and that is saying something. As the storyline is better, so is the soundtrack.
The Bear soundtrack is worth a listen
According to Variety, executive producers Josh Senior and Christopher Storer also oversee the music for the series. They consider using the music to help tell the story just as important as the writing. Choosing the music is a joint effort shared by others on the team, including some of the actors. Ayo Edebiri, who plays Sydney, and begins her story as Carmy's sous chef, was also helpful in this.
The music is essential to set the right tone of the scene, and Senior, Storer, and crew did a bang-up job of integrating just the right songs to create an amazing experience for the viewer.
