Why Edan's experimental psychedelic hip hop still matters today
By Wade Wainio
Today let's focus some attention on Edan Portnoy, known professionally as Edan, an American hip-hop artist, DJ, and producer. He's recognized for his innovative approach to hip-hop music, blending elements of psychedelic rock, funk, and electronic music into his productions. Edan gained prominence in the underground hip-hop scene with his debut album Primitive Plus in 2002, which showcased his eclectic style and lyrical prowess.
His sophomore album, Beauty and the Beat, is not to be confused with "Beauty and the Beat" (The Go-Go's album). Edan's cult classic album of that title was released in 2005, and it established his reputation as a boundary-pushing artist. The album received critical acclaim for its inventive production techniques, clever sampling, and Edan's witty and unconventional rhymes.
"Beauty and the Beat" is often cited as a classic in underground hip hop, along with albums like MF DOOM's "Operation: Doomsday." Apart from his solo work, Edan has collaborated with various artists and contributed to numerous projects in the hip hop community. He's known for his skills as a DJ, often incorporating live scratching and mixing into his performances.
Edan's influence extends beyond his music; he's also recognized for his contributions to the visual aspects of hip hop culture, including his album artwork and music videos, which often feature psychedelic and retro-futuristic aesthetics. While he hasn't released a full-length album since "Beauty and the Beat," Edan remains active in the music scene, occasionally releasing singles and collaborating with other artists. His work continues to inspire and influence a new generation of hip hop musicians.
Why Edan matters even today
In addition to his musical and visual contributions, Edan has also been praised for his live performances. Combining his turntable mastery with vocal delivery, Edan creates an immersive, high-energy experience for audiences. His shows often feature spontaneous moments of improvisation, showcasing his multiple talents.
Beyond music, Edan is regarded as a scholar of hip hop history, often exploring and referencing the genre’s golden era through his work. His deep appreciation for the roots of hip-hop is evident in his use of old-school samples and his focus on preserving the cultural heritage of the genre.
This dedication to blending the past with his own futuristic style has made him a unique and respected figure in hip-hop culture, even if not very prolific (one of his most recent interviews is from 2018). Some artists, like Neil Young, are known for putting out loads of albums. Not Edan.
