Elton John, the legendary British musician known for his hits like "Rocket Man" and "Your Song," recently revealed that he has lost vision in his right eye due to a severe infection.

This condition has significantly affected his life and work, including his ability to record new music and attend performances. Specifically, he said he currently has "only limited vision in one eye."

Despite these challenges, John remains optimistic about his recovery, sharing with Good Morning America that he is undergoing a slow healing process with hopes for improvement. On Sunday, December 1, during the gala opening of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical at London’s Dominion Theatre, John addressed the audience about his condition. He explained that he had missed most previews because of his eyesight loss but expressed his delight at hearing the performance, stating, "It sounded good tonight."

The event doubled as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and attracted notable attendees, including fashion icons Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour. The musical, based on the 2006 film of the same name, features a score co-written by John and composer Shaina Taub. It stars Vanessa Williams as the formidable editor Miranda Priestly, a role famously played by Meryl Streep in the movie.

More about Elton John and his eye condition

John first disclosed his vision problems in September, revealing that the infection began during the summer. He described his struggles with daily activities and his creative process, saying he cannot currently read lyrics or watch anything. The infection has disrupted his routine, but he emphasized his gratitude for his medical team and family’s support.

The 77-year-old artist, who recently earned EGOT — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony — status by winning an Emmy for his live concert special, continues to make an impact.

His documentary, Elton John: It’s Never Too Late, premiered in November and chronicles his storied career. Despite his health challenges, John remains focused on recovery and retains his legacy as one of music’s icons. Of course, Elton John is one of rock's most flamboyant performers, along with acts such as Queen, and has even been known to have a positive relationship with the band Metallica, who performed one of his songs at the Gershwin Prize Ceremony!
