How Linkin Park rebuilt and already thrived with 'From Zero'
By Wade Wainio
In a recent interview, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda opened up about the emotional journey behind the band’s comeback album, From Zero. Released on November 15, 2024, this marks their first studio album since the tragic passing of lead vocalist Chester Bennington in 2017 and the departure of founding drummer Rob Bourdon in 2022.
With a restructured lineup, the album introduces Emily Armstrong, formerly of Dead Sara, as co-vocalist and Colin Brittain as drummer, joining Shinoda, bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, DJ Joe Hahn, and guitarist Brad Delson. Delson, while continuing to contribute creatively, has stepped back from touring, with Alex Feder filling in during live performances.
Shinoda reflected on the nu metal band's organic evolution, describing a process where they prioritized authenticity over urgency. Initially, informal jam sessions between Shinoda, Farrell, and Hahn gradually reignited the group's creativity. The decision to bring in Armstrong, whose emotionally charged vocal style resonated with the band's ethos, was pivotal.
Her integration into the group grew naturally over years of collaboration, culminating in her full participation on From Zero. As Shinoda remarked, the album embodies "past, present, and future,"
paying homage to their roots while exploring new horizons.
Linkin Park seems to be doing okay
When discussing the album’s sound, Shinoda acknowledged its blend of traditional, nostalgic elements and fresh innovation. Critics have noted that From Zero revisits the raw energy and layered melodies reminiscent of Linkin Park’s earlier works, fused with Armstrong’s powerful vocals and Brittain’s dynamic drumming. Tracks like "The Emptiness Machine" highlight the synergy between the band’s legacy and its revamped lineup.
The album title itself is a nod to their original name, Xero, symbolizing both a return to their origins and a bold step forward. Fortunately, sometimes fans are mostly accepting of lineup changes, despite there always being some critics.
Farrell shared his excitement about the new lineup, emphasizing the natural chemistry that developed during the creative process. He described how Armstrong and Brittain seamlessly integrated into the band, making the production process not only cohesive but exhilarating. The album has been well-received by fans, debuting at No. 1 in multiple countries and amassing significant sales through physical copies, downloads, and streams.
