Jack Black's recent TikTok upload has set his fans abuzz once again. Known for his versatile performances, from cameo appearances in The Mandalorian to recently voicing an iconic video game character (King Koopa, who also sang the movie's viral hit song, "Peaches"), Black's latest rendition of a Britney Spears classic has left fans clamoring for more. While Jack Black has showcased his talents across various mediums, music undoubtedly remains close to his heart, evident in his acclaimed work with Tenacious D.
In this latest TikTok gem, accompanied by his longtime friend and Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass, Black brings his signature energy to a cover of Britney Spears' hit "…Baby One More Time," delivering a rendition that has left viewers in awe. Also, with Britney Spears recently in the news, and with it being a pretty big year for women in music, it also makes sense from a business perspective for Tenacious D to give some attention to a female star.
The TikTok performance has garnered widespread praise, with many fans expressing their admiration for Black's take on the iconic track. Some even suggest that Black should consider a full-blown project dedicated to covering similar hits from the early 2000s. Speaking for myself, I say that, even as someone who wasn't a fan of pop music from this era, I would love an album featuring Jack Black's unique spin on early 2000s pop classics (what one source refers to as an "early 2000s white girl" album)
Jack Black and Tenacious D have a future
While the prospect of a 2000s pop project remains uncertain, fans can look forward to catching Black's return as Po in the upcoming installment of Kung Fu Panda, hitting theaters on March 8, 2024. Of course, if you think "the warrior of black-and-white" is garbage, maybe you're a fan of Tenacious D, who will probably still do a little of this and that (as they have for years). They have been rocking people's faces off for years, and surely plan to continue on that royal quest.
Yes, the anticipation for more musical magic from Jack Black continues to grow. That being said, let's not overlook Mr. Gass, who was referred to in "Classico" by Tenacious D in this fashion:
"Can't you see he's the man,
Let me hear you applaud,
He is more than a man,
He's a shiny golden god...”
On that note, here is one of my personal favorite songs by Tenacious D, which really helps explain the appeal of metal music even to non-fans:
