Peter Frampton has already released one of the great live albums, Frampton Comes Alive. Now he’s lining up another from an iconic venue.
In 2019, Frampton was nearing the end of what was then labeled as his farewell tour. Disrupted by the covid pandemic, Frampton played his North American dates but had to cancel the dates in Europe. It wasn’t until November 2022 that he could resume the European leg and close the tour.
Those final dates were pretty significant for Frampton. Firstly they showed that he could still perform live despite his debilitating Inclusion Body Myositis, a slowly progressive muscle weakening and wasting disease. He even played seated. Those European gigs gave Frampton the confidence to launch his Never Say Never tour in April, playing dates in the U.S. this summer.
Peter Frampton at the Royal Albert Hall
Included in the European dates was a night at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London. I was lucky enough to have tickets for this sell-out show. It was, without a doubt, a fantastic concert at a superb venue.
It’s also well worth a shout-out for Frampton’s support act at the London gig, Cardinal Black. A fabulous band from Wales with their own outstanding guitarist, Chris Buck. Do look them up and give them a listen.
The Royal Albert Hall has tremendous acoustics, which suited Frampton and his band perfectly as they played their hearts out on an extensive set list. It was nice to see the whole band play seated alongside Frampton; you wouldn’t know from the energy that went into each and every song.
You can hear how good the night was for yourself very soon. Frampton has just announced that he’s releasing the highlights from the Royal Albert Hall show on various music formats in September. There’s an early taste of his live classic hit “Baby I Love Your Way” from that night available online now, and preorders can be placed for the album.
Based on what I saw and heard on that great November night in London, the new album is a must. I can’t wait to relive the evening and Frampton’s music again.
