5. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboys

This album is Elton John and writing partner Bernie Taupin’s autobiographical concept album and, beyond the huge hit Someone Saved My Life Tonight, features some great album cuts including the title track and my personal favorite Bitter Fingers.

Bitter Fingers recounts the days when John and Taupin were writers for hire in London and has one of my favorite moments in Elton’s entire catalog when he sings “I’m sick of tra la la’s and la di da’s” to be answered by a chorus of “La di da’s”. At times this album can be a bit difficult to get through but the work by all the musicians is so strong that it is a rewarding listen every time.
